Fact Finding Report of GASS on Child Deaths in Malkangiri The government of Odisha has failed to check deaths of children due to an outbreak of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in the district of Malkangiri. A total of 136 children have succumbed to JE over the past three months but the government’s response has been pathetic. This is not for the first time that we have been witness to gross governmental neglect. What is new this time is that the government, instead of acknowledging its carelessness and inability to effectively address the tragedy, has even started blaming the tribals for the deaths! Government functionaries are asserting that the deaths are occurring because the adivasis raise pigs and eat Bana Chakunda. (A wild grass whose bean-like seeds contain anthroquinone, a toxin). Nagada Child Deaths - Intention Doubtful A Fact-finding Report The Nagada village of Chingudipala Panchayat of Sukinda block in Jajpur district, Odisha caught headlines of the state and national media due to continuous child deaths in July-August, 2016. Now five to six months have already passed. A six-member team of the “Ganatantrik Adhikar Surakha Sangathan” visited the place on 4 th February 2017 to know about on-going programs of the government in addressing malnutrition problems of Nagada village. The team visited villages such as Upara Nagada, Majhi Nagada, Tala Nagada and Naliadaba villages of Chingudipala panchayat. Two months back our team had gone to Malkangiri district where more than hundred children died in few months due to Japanese Encephalitis (JE). Opposition to Vedanta in Kodinga proxy-mining

It has been the practice of the government of Odisha to hand over land and forest of local people without asking their consent to various mining companies either in a back-door policy or using police force or both which Ganatantrik Adhikar Suraksha Sangatha, Odisha (GASS) has been opposing. On 11 th August 2017, the villagers of five villages, namely, Singaram, Biriguda, Biriguda colony, Balijodi and Odiapentah situated on foot of Kondinga Hill of Rayagada – Koraput district of southern Odisha, opposing the decision of the government to hand over the Hill to Vedanta company in such backdoor policy, have passed resolution, “not to give any patta land, forest land and community land to any mining company”. Workers arrested on false charges of "sedition"

Press Release 7 th August 2017             Two mine workers, Rabi Murmu and Abhimanyu Mahanta, of Sukinda Chromite mining area of Jajpur district of Odisha, while opposing their illegal suspension from their work, while they were uniting other workers to place their common demands before the management and while both of them were questioning the silence of existing trade unions on workers’ issue  have been arrested on false charges of “sedition”, “riot”, “waging war against the State” and under various sections of Unlawful Activities of Prevention Act (or “Maoist”). Both of them were arrested on 12 th June 2017.
